Verse range: 70:18

Open in Qurani

And gathered, then withheld.

That is: He gathered wealth and placed it in a vessel (container), hoarding it without fulfilling its obligations, becoming preoccupied with it to the neglect of religion, pridefully accumulating it out of greed and wishful thinking. This is an allusion to the wealthy disbelievers.

How fearful was Abdullah bin Ukaym! Ibn Sa'id narrated from Al-Hakam that he said: Abdullah bin Ukaym would never tie his purse, saying, "I heard Allah the Almighty say: 'And gathered, then withheld.'"
