Tafsir of Al-Jinn 72:20

Say: "I only invoke [i.e., worship] my Lord, and I do not associate anyone with Him in worship." This is neither a novelty nor something reprehensible that necessitates astonishment or a unanimous conspiracy against my enmity.

Most [reciters] read it as "Qala" (He said), based on it being a narration from Allah Almighty of what the Prophet—may Allah Almighty bless him and grant him peace—said to those who crowded upon him, or a narration from the Jinn to him upon their return to their people; so do not be heedless.

The reading of the imperative [i.e., "Qul" (Say)]—which is the reading of Asim, Hamza, and Abu Amr (with a narration of disagreement regarding him)—is more consistent with His, the Exalted’s, statement...
