"Leave Me and him whom I created alone" was revealed concerning al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah al-Makhzumi, as narrated by Ibn Abbas, Mujahid, Qatadah, and others. Indeed, it has been said that there is a consensus regarding its revelation concerning him. This necessitates that this surah was not revealed in its entirety at once, since the affair of al-Walid and the circumstances necessitating the revelation of the verse did not exist at the beginning of the mission; so do not be heedless.

Wahidan (alone) is a state (hal), either:

  1. Referring to the [hidden] 'ya' in dharni (leave me). This is what is narrated from Mujahid, meaning: "Leave me alone with him, for I suffice you in taking vengeance, instead of any other avenger."
  2. Referring to the 'ta' in khalaqtu (I created), meaning: "I created him alone; no one participated with Me in his creation, so I shall destroy him, having no need of any helper in his destruction."
  3. Referring to the omitted pronoun returning to man (him whom), according to what Abu Hayyan considered most evident, meaning: "And him whom I created alone, solitary, having neither wealth nor children."

It is also permitted that it be in the accusative case as an object of a suppressed verb such as "I vilify" (adhammu) or similar, for al-Walid was nicknamed "the unique one" (al-wahid) among his people. Thus, Allah, the Exalted, mocked him and his nickname, or diverted it from the purpose they intended—his praise and commendation—to the aspect of his condemnation and defect. Thus, He—Glorified be He—intended "unique" in wickedness and evil, or "unique" (fatherless) in relation to his father, as he was a claimant (da'i) whose lineage was not truly known to belong to al-Mughirah, as previously mentioned in Surah Nun.
