ﳄ ﳅ ﳆ ﳇ
And to whom I granted extensive wealth
Tafsir
Verse range: 74:12
"And I granted him extensive wealth."
That is, spread out and abundant. Or, it is "extended," like the extension of a river; one river flowing into another. It is said that he possessed livestock, crops, and trade. According to Ibn Abbas, it refers to what he possessed between Mecca and Taif: camels, livestock, orchards, and servants. It is said he had an orchard in Taif whose fruits never ceased, neither in summer nor winter. Al-Nu'man ibn Bashir said, "The extended wealth is land, because it has been extended."
It is narrated from Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, that it is the revenue which is collected month after month; thus, it is extended and does not cease.
From Ibn Abbas, Mujahid, and Ibn Jubayr, it is reported that he had one thousand dinars. From Qatada, six thousand dinars. It is also said nine thousand dinars. From Sufyan al-Thawri, there are two narrations: four thousand dinars, and one thousand dinars.
These statements, if authentic, are not intended to specify the amount of the "extended wealth," nor that whenever it is mentioned in an absolute sense, such a specific amount is intended. Rather, they serve as an explanation that, relative to the one being spoken of, his wealth was of such and such nature.
