Tafsir
Verse range: 74:16
"Nay" is a particle of deterrence and rebuke for his empty greed, and a cutting off of his disappointed hope. His saying, the Glorified, "Indeed he has been to Our verses stubborn," is a sentence that is an explanatory commencement for what preceded it, as if it were said: Why was he rebuked for seeking an increase, and what is the reason for its impropriety? It was said: Because he was stubborn toward the verses of the Bestower—which are the evidences of His oneness, or the Quranic verses regarding which he said what he said. Stubbornness is appropriate for removal and prevents increase. Muqatil said: Al-Walid continued to be in a state of decrease regarding his wealth and his children after the revelation of this verse, until he perished.
