ﳘ ﳙ ﳚ ﳛ
Then upon Us is its clarification [to you].
Tafsir
Verse range: 75:19
Meaning: To clarify whatever of its meanings and rulings may have become unclear to you.
It has been said, and Qadi Abu al-Tayyib and those who followed him used this as evidence for the permissibility of delaying clarification beyond the time of the initial address, due to the presence of the particle thumma (then). This has been countered by the argument that "clarification" here may mean to make manifest, rather than to explain an ambiguous (mujmal) matter.
It has been authentically narrated in the report from the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim) and a group [of scholars] that regarding this verse, the Prophet said: "Then it is upon Us to explain it through your tongue." In the wording, "It is upon Us that you should recite it."
This is supported by the fact that what is intended is the clarification of the entire Quran, whereas the ambiguous matters constitute only a part of it.
