Tafsir

Ruh al-Ma'ani

Verse range: 75:28

Open in Qurani

"And he concludes that it is the separation."

Meaning: The dying person assumes that what has descended upon him is the separation from his beloved worldly life and its pleasures. It has also been said: it is the separation of the soul from the body.

Regarding the term "assumption" (al-ẓann) here: according to Abu Hayyan, it is to be understood in its literal sense (as a probability), whereas the majority of exegetes interpret it as "certainty" (al-yaqīn).

The Imam stated: Perhaps it was termed "assumption" here in place of "certainty" because as long as a person’s soul remains attached to their body, they covet life due to their intense love for this fleeting existence. Their hope for it does not cease, and thus they do not attain the certainty of death, but rather a predominant assumption accompanied by a hope for life. Alternatively, it may have been termed "assumption" by way of sarcasm.
