Is that One of magnificent status, who originated this marvelous creation, not able—that is, "capable" (qādiran)—to revive the dead? Zayd recited it as a present tense verb (yaqdiru), meaning: "Is He not able to revive the dead?" And this is easier than the initiation of creation according to rational measurement.
Talha ibn Sulaymān and al-Fayḍ ibn Ghazwān recited it as "yuḥyā" with the yā’ made quiescent. You know that its vowel marks are inflectional (i'rāb) and are not elided except when pausing; however, it has occurred in poetry that they are elided without such a pause. From some, it is reported as "yuḥyya" by transferring the vowel of the yā’ to the ḥā’ and assimilating the yā’ into the yā’. Ibn Khālawayh said: The scholars of Basra, Sibawayh and his companions, do not permit the assimilation of "yuḥyyī." They say this is due to the quiescence of the second yā’, and they do not count the fatḥah upon it because it is an inflectional vowel that is not permanent. Al-Farrā’ permitted this and argued using the saying [in poetry]: "tamshī bishiddatin fata'ī" (she walks with difficulty and becomes exhausted/fatigued), intending "fata'yā." In summary, the reading is irregular (shādh).
It has come in several reports that when the Prophet—may Allah Almighty bless him—recited this verse, he would say: "Glory be to You, O Allah, and indeed/balā." In some, it says: "Glory be to You, and indeed/balā."
Aḥmad, Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī, Ibn al-Mundhir, Ibn Mardūyah, al-Bayhaqī, and al-Ḥākim—who authenticated it—narrated from Abū Hurayrah that he said: The Messenger of Allah—may Allah Almighty bless him—said: "Whoever among you recites 'By the Fig and the Olive' and reaches the end of it, 'Is Allah not the best of judges?', let him say: 'Indeed, and I am of those who bear witness to that.' And whoever recites 'I swear by the Day of Resurrection' and reaches 'Is that not able to revive the dead?', let him say: 'Indeed/balā.' And whoever recites 'By the emissaries' and reaches 'Then in what message after it will they believe?', let him say: 'We have believed in Allah.'"
