Surah Al-Mursalat 77:25



ﱘ ﱙ ﱚ ﱛ

Have We not made the earth a container

{ أَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ الْأَرْضَ كِفَاتًا }

Kifat is a noun of state or a noun of instrument for that which yakfut—that is, gathers and collects. It is derived from the expression "I kaftu the thing," meaning I gathered it, similar to dhimam (that which binds) and jima' (that which collects) for that which gathers and collects. They recited the verse of as-Samsamah ibn at-Tirimmah:

You are today upon the earth, alive, And tomorrow it will gather you into a kifat (receptacle).

Abu Ubaydah interpreted it as "the container." As for the words of the Almighty:
