Tafsir of An-Nazi'at 79:33

It is said that "an enjoyment" (mata'an) is an object for which the action is performed (maf'ul lahu), meaning: He did that to provide enjoyment for you and for your grazing livestock, because the benefit of what was mentioned—the spreading of the earth, the bringing forth of its water, and its pasture—reaches them and their livestock. For "pasture" (mar'a), as you have heard, is a metaphor for what is consumed by humans and others.

It is also said that it is an infinitive (masdar) emphasizing its implied verb, meaning: He provided you with an enjoyment (matta'akum) through this. Or, it is an infinitive from a root other than that of its verb, for His saying—Exalted is He—"He brought forth from it its water and its pasture" carries the meaning of "He provided enjoyment through that."

An objection was raised against the first view: the address is directed to the deniers of resurrection, and the intention is the enjoyment of the believers, so making the enjoyment of others the purpose does not fit. Therefore, the view that follows it is better. It has been answered that although the direct address is specific to those present, its ruling is general, as established in the principles of jurisprudence; thus, the ultimate meaning relates to the enjoyment of the entire species. Furthermore, assigning the accusative case based on the infinitive acting for its implied verb does not remove the difficulty, as it would be an independent clause explaining the purpose. It is not hidden that the claim that the intention is solely the enjoyment of the believers is a matter of debate. And His saying—Glorified is He—
