Al-Anfal: 28

"And know that your wealth and your children are a trial"

They are a cause for falling into sin and punishment, or a tribulation from Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, by which He tests you. Therefore, let not the love for them compel you to commit treachery, as was the case with Abu Lubabah. Perhaps the trial in wealth is greater than the trial in children, and that is why wealth was mentioned before children. The hyperbole contained in these reports is not hidden.

It has been narrated from Ibn Mas’ud: "There is not one among you who is not encompassed by a trial, for Allah, the Glorified, says: 'And know that your wealth...' and so on. So, whoever among you seeks refuge, let him seek refuge with Allah, the Exalted, from the misleading trials." A similar statement is attributed to Ali, may Allah, the Exalted, ennoble his countenance.

"And that Allah has with Him a great reward"

For those who incline toward Him, the Glorified, and prefer His pleasure over them [wealth and children], and observe His boundaries regarding them. Therefore, attach your aspirations to that which will lead you to Him.
