Surah Al-Anfal 8:73

ﲛ ﲜ ﲝ ﲞ ﲟ ﲠ ﲡ ﲢ ﲣ ﲤ ﲥ ﲦ ﲧ ﲨ

And those who disbelieved are allies of one another. If you do not do so, there will be fitnah on earth and great corruption.

And those who disbelieved, some of them are allies of others.

They are allies one to another—meaning, in terms of inheritance, as has been narrated from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them. Qatadah and Ibn Ishaq said: "In mutual support." By its implication, this indicates the negation of inheritance and mutual support between them and the Muslims, and makes the opposite mandatory, even if they are relatives. From this, the majority have held that a Muslim does not inherit from an unbeliever, nor does an unbeliever inherit from a Muslim. Ibn Marduyah and Al-Hakim recorded this, and the latter authenticated it, on the authority of Usamah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said this and recited the verse. Some people have said that the Muslim inherits from the unbeliever but not the reverse, yet this is not something to be relied upon; the fatwa is in accordance with the first view, as has been established in its proper place.

"Unless you do it"—meaning, unless you do what you have been commanded in the two verses [of this chapter]. It is also said that the accusative pronoun refers to the covenant, or upholding it, or inheritance, or aid, or seeking aid, as understood from the action. The first view is what we mentioned, while the latter contains an obvious degree of affectation.

"There will be tribulation in the land"—meaning, a great tribulation will occur therein, which is the divergence of the word [unity], the weakening of faith, the emergence of disbelief, and great corruption.

And it is bloodshed, according to what has been narrated from Al-Hasan; thus the intended meaning is great corruption in the land. It is also said that the meaning applies to both this world and the Hereafter, but this is contrary to the apparent meaning. It is narrated from Al-Kisa'i that he read it as "kathir" (abundant) with the three-dotted letter [tha].
