Verse range: 80:26
This means by way of vegetation, as Ibn Abbas said: a wondrous cleaving, appropriate to what emerges from it in terms of vegetation—in smallness, greatness, shape, and form.
It has been said that it means cleaving it by plowing. Attributing this to His Exalted pronoun is a metaphor, being an instance of attributing an action to a cause, even though Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, is the true Creator. It has already been explained in its proper place that an action is truly attributed to the one who performs it, not to the one from whom it originated by way of creation; it is for this reason that the active participle (ism al-fa'il) is derived for the former.
This view was contested on the grounds that the word "then" (thumma) rejects it.
