Tafsir of Abasa 80:28

"Grapes" (‘Inab) are well-known. As for "clover" (Qaḍban), Ibn Jarīr, Ibn al-Mundhir, and Ibn Abī Ḥātim recorded from Ibn ‘Abbās that he said: "It is alfalfa (al-faṣfaṣah)." Al-Khalīl restricted it to fresh vegetation, stating: "When it dries, it is called qatt." It is named with the verbal noun of qaḍaba, meaning to cut, as an intensive form, as if the repetition and abundance of its cutting were the very act of cutting itself.

The view of those who interpreted "pasture" (al-abb) as inclusive of this is considered weak. It has also been said that it refers to every plant that is cut for humans to eat while fresh, such as vegetables and asparagus. In al-Baḥr, it is reported from the Master (Ibn ‘Abbās) that it refers to fresh dates, as they are "cut" (yuqḍab) from the palm tree, and he sought support for this by its mention alongside grapes. However, the flaw in that is not hidden.
