*‘Abasa: (9) And he fears [Allah]*

And he fears, meaning he fears Allah, Exalted is He. It is also said: he fears the harm of the disbelievers in coming [to the Prophet]. It is also said: he fears stumbling or falling, as he had no guide with him. The clause is a state (ḥāl) describing the subject of "he strives," just as the clause "he strives" is a state describing the subject of "he came to you."

Some scholars have suggested that the sublime composition involves iḥtibāk (mutual ellipsis), by mentioning wealth first to signify poverty second, and mentioning the coming and the fear second to signify their opposites first. It is as if he interpreted "he deems himself self-sufficient" according to what was reported lastly, and perceived the objections raised against it, thus necessitating this artifice to defend it; while the lack of need for such [an interpretation], according to what we have reported, is abundantly clear.
