And when the souls are paired
ﱡ ﱢ ﱣ
And when the souls are paired
Tafsir
Verse range: 81:7
This means: every soul shall be joined with its counterpart. A group, including Al-Hakim—who authenticated it—narrated from Nu'man ibn Bashir, on the authority of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), that he was asked about this and replied: "The righteous man shall be joined with the righteous man in Paradise, and the evil man shall be joined with the evil man in the Fire; that is the pairing of the souls." In a marfu' (elevated) hadith also narrated by Nu'man, there is that which supports this apparent meaning.
Some have said: This refers to the Gathering (al-mawqif), where they are joined by strata: the prophets, then the saints, then the likes and the most like.
Muqatil ibn Sulayman said: The souls of the believers are paired with their spouses from the Houris and others, and the souls of the disbelievers with the devils.
It has also been said: Each soul is paired with its record. It has also been said: Each soul is paired with its deeds. It has been suggested that it means each soul is joined with its adversary, so it cannot flee from it. Yet you know that the idea of every soul having an adversary is far from established.
In any case, "soul" here means the self, and "pairing" means making a thing a pair, that is, a companion.
Ikrimah, Ad-Dahhak, and Ash-Sha'bi said: The souls are joined with their spouses at the time of the Resurrection, and "soul" here means the spirit (ruh).
'Asim recited zuwwijat (paired) as faw'ilat.
