Tafsir of Al-Infitar 82:17-18

(And what will make you know what the Day of Recompense is? Then what will make you know what the Day of Recompense is?)

This is an aggrandizement of the status of the Day which they deny, following one aggrandizement and expression of wonder after another. The address in it is general, and the intended meaning is that its essence is such that no one who possesses knowledge could truly comprehend it. It is also said that the address is directed to the Master of all those addressed, may Allah the Exalted bless him and grant him peace. It is also said that it is directed to the disbeliever.

The use of the explicit noun in place of a pronoun serves to emphasize the terror and the grandiosity of the Day of Recompense. The discussion regarding whether the interrogative in such instances functions as a subject or as a predicate brought forward has already preceded, so do not be heedless of it.
