Verse range: 84:12
It means he shall endure its heat, or he shall enter it. The majority of the seven [qurrāʾ], along with ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, Abū al-Shaʿthāʾ, al-Ḥasan, and al-Aʿraj, read it as yuṣallā—with a ḍamma on the yāʾ, a fatḥa on the ṣād, and a shadda on the lām—derived from al-taṣliyah (scorching/roasting), based on the words of the Exalted: "And the scorching of a Hellfire."
Abū al-Ashhab, Khārijah (from Nāfiʿ), Abān (from ʿĀṣim), and a group from Abū ʿAmr read it as yuṣlā—with a ḍamma on the yāʾ, a sukūn on the ṣād, and a khafīf (non-geminated) lām, in the passive voice, derived from al-iṣlāʾ, based on the words of the Exalted: "And We shall cast him into Hellfire."
