Tafsir of Al-Inshiqaq 84:14

"Indeed, he had thought that he would never return" is an explanation for his joy in the worldly life; meaning, he thought that he would never return to Allah Almighty, due to his denial of the Resurrection. It is also said that he thought he would never return to non-existence, meaning he thought he would not die, and he was heedless of death, unprepared for it; though this is not a strong position. Al-hawr (returning) means returning in an absolute sense, and from this is the poet’s saying:

"A man is but like a shooting star and its light, It returns (yahuru) to ashes after having been bright."

The restriction here is determined by the context of the passage. The mukhaffafah (lightened) anna (that) functions with its predicate as a substitute for the two objects of the verb "to think," according to the well-known position.
