Al-Buruj: (11) Indeed, those who have believed...

Indeed, those who have believed and performed righteous deeds—without restriction, whether they were among the persecuted or others—shall have, by virtue of what has been mentioned of faith and righteous conduct, gardens beneath which rivers flow. If "gardens" refers to the trees, then the flowing of rivers beneath them is evident. If it refers to the land encompassing them, then the "beneath" refers to their surface area, for their trees cover their expanse, as the word jannah (garden/concealment) signifies.

The sentence is said to be like a confirmation of what the previous verse implied regarding the specification of punishment for those who persecuted the believing men and women and did not repent. "That" (dhalika) refers to the state of what has been mentioned for them and their acquisition of it. It is also said that it refers to the described gardens, and the use of the masculine pronoun (dhalika) is due to interpreting the gardens as "that which has been mentioned."

The inclusion of the demonstrative pronoun serves to signal the loftiness of their rank and the remoteness of their status in excellence and honor. Its grammatical position is nominative as an ibtida’ (subject), and its predicate is "the great attainment" (al-fawz al-kabir), in comparison to which worldly success and all its desirable things become insignificant. "Attainment" (al-fawz) means salvation from evil and the triumph of good. Thus, according to the second interpretation of the demonstrative pronoun, it is a verbal noun used to denote the object, employed in the superlative sense; while according to the first, it is a verbal noun in its primary sense.
