Tafsir of Al-Burooj 85:18

(Pharaoh and Thamud) are an appositive (badal) for "the hosts" (al-junud), an appositive of the whole from the whole, with the omission of an added term (mudaf); meaning: "the hosts of Pharaoh and Thamud." Or, it is on the basis that by "Pharaoh" is meant him and his people, and mentioning him sufficed for them because they were his followers. It is said that the appositive is the collective sum, not each of the conjoined items individually, though this is contrary to the apparent meaning. Al-Samin said: "It is permissible for it to be in the accusative case (mansub) by an implied verb of specification (a’ni—'I mean'), and since it does not match what precedes it, it becomes obligatory." This was challenged on the grounds that it would then be an explanation (tafsir) of "the hosts," whereby the problem returns. It was answered that the explained object would then be the collective sum, and considering it with a’ni is not the same as considering it in the context of an appositive. The "tidings of them" (hadithuhum) refers to what emanated from them in terms of persistence in disbelief and misguidance, and what befell them in terms of punishment and retribution. The meaning is: "The tidings of them have indeed come to you, and you have known what they did and what was done to them." Therefore, remind your people of the days of Allah—Exalted is He—and His affairs, and warn them lest there befall them the likes of what befell their counterparts. And His saying—Exalted is He—...
