[He] who will [enter and] burn in the greatest Fire,
Tafsir
Verse range: 87:12
(He who will burn in the Great Fire), meaning the lowest layer among the layers of Hell, as Al-Farra' stated. There is no impossibility in the variation of the Fire of the Hereafter, nor in some parts of it being greater than others and more intense in heat.
Al-Hasan said: "The Great Fire is the Fire of the Hereafter, and the Lesser Fire is the fire of this world." In the Sahihayn, on the authority of Abu Hurairah, reported in a marfu' (elevated) manner: "This fire of yours is one part out of seventy parts of the Fire of Hell." In a narration by Imam Ahmad, also on his authority in a marfu' manner: "Indeed, this fire is one part out of one hundred parts of Hell." Perhaps the number seventy is intended to denote abundance, which is common.
