Al-A'la: 14 - "He has certainly succeeded, he who..."

"He has certainly succeeded" means he has been saved from that which is disliked and has attained what he hopes for. "He who has purified himself" means he who has cleansed himself from polytheism by remembering and taking heed of the Reminder. This interpretation is reported from Ibn Abbas and others. Al-Bazzar and Ibn Marduyah recorded from Jabir ibn Abdullah, from the Prophet (may Allah exalt his mention and grant him peace), that he said regarding this: "He who testifies that there is no god but Allah, discards partners [ascribed to Him], and testifies that I am the Messenger of Allah."

Some scholars considered two matters, stating: "He has purified himself from disbelief and disobedience." Based on this, it is permissible that what was mentioned previously is a case of focusing only on the most important aspects.

It is also said: "He has purified himself" means he has increased in piety and fear [of Allah], derived from al-zaka' (growth). Others said: "He has purified himself for prayer." It is also said: "He has given the Zakah (obligatory charity)." This has been narrated from Abu al-Ahwas, Qatadah, and a group [of scholars].
