*Wa Zarabiyyu Mabthuthah* (And spread-out carpets)

"Wa zarabiyyu": These are luxurious rugs and carpets, as stated by more than one [scholar]. Al-Farra’ said: They are plush-piled, thick carpets. Al-Raghib stated: They are originally patterned garments attributed to a specific place, and the term was later borrowed for rugs. The singular form is zarbiyyah, with a zay that may be vocalized with a fathah (zarbiyyah), kasrah (zirbiyyah), or dammah (zurbiyyah). In the Sahah, no distinction is made between zarabiy (carpets) and namariq (cushions/pillows), although it is apparent that there is a difference. Indeed, it has been said that namariq has been used to mean zarabiy, as in the [line of poetry]: "We are the daughters of Tariq; we walk upon the namariq." This is because it is not customary for pillows to be walked upon.

"Mabthuthah": Spread out, or scattered about in the gatherings.
