Verse range: 89:22
"And your Lord has come" — Mundhir ibn Sa’id said: Its meaning is that He, Glory be to Him, manifests to the creation there, and this is not a coming of movement (displacement), just as the coming of "the Overwhelming Calamity" (al-Tamma) and "the Deafening Blast" (al-Sakhkha) is not a coming of movement. It is said that the speech is based on the omission of an added term for the sake of magnification (tawil), meaning: "And the decree of your Lord has come."
A group has chosen the view that it is an allegory (tamthil) for the manifestation of the signs of His omnipotence, Exalted is He, and the clarification of the traces of His power and authority. His state, Glorified be He, in that situation is likened to the state of a king who, when he arrives in person, there manifests to those in his presence of the signs of awe and majesty what does not manifest through the mere presence of his armies, ministers, and elite retinues entirely. You should know what the Salaf have said regarding the ambiguous (mutashabih) verses.
"And the angels" — that is, the genus of angels, thus including all the angels of the heavens, peace be upon them.
"Row upon row (saffan saffan)" — meaning standing in rows, or possessing rows. It is said that on the Day of Resurrection, the angels of every heaven will descend and stand in a row after a row, according to their stations and ranks, surrounding the Jinn and mankind. It is also said that they will stand in rows according to the places of affairs related to them, which is close to what was mentioned previously. It has been narrated that the angels of every heaven will form one row around the earth, so the rows will be seven, as is the apparent interpretation.
Some scholars said: It is apparent that "the angels" encompasses the angels of the heavens and others, and the definite article (al-) denotes universality (istighraq). It is claimed that their standing in rows according to their ranks is like the standing of the people of this world in prayer, though its apparent meaning is that it is a standing without surrounding (the people). However, I have seen more than one report indicating that they stand in rows while surrounding them.
