Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him],

"Return" means: return from the place where you were held to account, to your Lord; that is, to the place of His Divine care and the station of His honor—Exalted and Majestic is He—that was initially yours. This is because the fortunate ones, as understood from the traditions, have a specific station at the Gathering place before the reckoning, where Allah honors them in a way that they do not experience what others experience in their stations of hardship. From that station, they are called one by one to account. Therefore, when this command is given upon the completion of the reckoning, it necessitates the meaning aforementioned.

It is also permissible that the meaning be: "Return by emptying the heart of deeds, of turning toward them, and of concern for their status—whether they were accepted or not." That is, focus on your Lord and sever all connections to anything other than Him—Exalted and Majestic is He—just as you were before. For when the tranquil soul was summoned for reckoning, its thoughts were preoccupied, despite its innate tranquility and the state of that day, with the matter of the reckoning and where it would lead, and what the outcome of its deeds would be—whether they were accepted or not. When its reckoning was completed and its deeds were accepted, it was told this to console its heart, that the matter had ended and was finished, for "after the meal, there is no further news." Calling it by the title of "tranquility" serves to remind it of what necessitates this return, similar to your saying to a hero known for his courage who hesitates in some situation: "O brave one, do not hesitate." The apparent meaning on the first interpretation does not contradict this, and the extra kindness conveyed in His saying—Glorified is He—"to your Lord" in both interpretations is not hidden. For this reason, He did not say something like "Return to Allah" or "to the abode."

"Well-pleased" means: pleased with the endless blessings given to it. It is also said: pleased with the ease of the reckoning and the acceptance of deeds, though that is not as strong.

"And well-pleasing" means: well-pleasing to Allah—Exalted and Majestic is He. It has been said that the meaning is: pleased with your Lord and well-pleasing to Him. Some have claimed this to be the most apparent interpretation, though it has been objected that it does not fit the context, yet there is a view on that. Both descriptors are in the accusative case as states (hal). It is apparent that the first state is prospective, though it is said to be concurrent. Mentioning the second state is a matter of ascending progression, for He—Glorified and Exalted is He—has said: "And approval from Allah is greater."
