Tafsir of At-Tawbah 9:27

(Then Allah will turn in forgiveness after that) punishing whomsoever He wills from among them, for a wisdom that requires it. The intended meaning is that He grants them success in embracing Islam. (And Allah is Forgiving) pardoning what preceded from them of disbelief and acts of disobedience, (Merciful) bestowing grace upon them and rewarding them, without any obligation upon Him—glory be to Him.

Al-Bukhari narrated from al-Miswar ibn Makhrama that some people from among them came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah exalt his mention and grant him peace, and pledged allegiance to him upon Islam. They said, "O Messenger of Allah, you are the best of people and the most righteous of people. Our families and children have been taken captive, and our wealth has been seized." On that day, six thousand souls had been taken captive, and an uncountable number of camels and sheep had been seized. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "I possess what you see; the best of speech is the truest. Choose either your children and women or your wealth." They replied, "We would not trade our lineage (kinship) for anything."

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, stood up and said: "These people have come to us as Muslims, and we have given them the choice between their children and their wealth, and they did not trade them for anything. So, whoever has anything in his possession and is willing to return it, that is his choice; and whoever is not, let him give it to us, and it shall be a debt upon us until we obtain something and provide it in its place." They said, "We are satisfied and we submit." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "We do not know, perhaps there are some among you who are not satisfied. Command your representatives (leaders) to report this back to us." The representatives reported to him, may Allah exalt his mention and grant him peace, that they were indeed satisfied.
