If only they had been satisfied with what Allah and His Messenger gave them and said, "Sufficient for us is Allah; Allah will give us of His bounty, and [so will] His Messenger; indeed, we are desirous toward Allah," [it would have been better for them].
Tafsir

"If they had been satisfied with what Allah and His Messenger gave them..."—that is, what the Messenger (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) gave them from the alms, being well-pleased with it, even if it were little. Although "what" (ma) is among the forms of generality, what precedes and follows it serves as context for specification. Some, however, have kept it in its general sense—meaning whatever he gave them of alms or spoils of war—it being said that this is more appropriate. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, is mentioned for glorification and to alert that what the Messenger (upon him be prayer and peace) did was by the command of the Glorified.
"...and said, 'Allah is sufficient for us...'"—that is, His grace and what He has apportioned for us suffices us, as the meaning necessitates.
"...Allah will grant us out of His bounty, and His Messenger..."—after this, according to what we hope and aspire for.
"...indeed, we are desirous toward Allah..."—in that He may grant us His grace, Glorified is His Majesty. The entire verse is in the position of the conditional (protasis), and the consequent (apodosis) is omitted due to its obviousness—that is, "it would have been better for them and more beneficial." It has been said that the consequent of the conditional is "and they said," and the "and" (wa) is extra; however, that view is weak.
