{Then when He gave them of His bounty, they were stingy with it}
Meaning: They withheld the right of Allah, the Exalted, from it.
{And they turned away}
Meaning: They turned away from the obedience of Allah, the Glorified.
{While they are averse}
Meaning: They are a people whose habit is aversion to acts of obedience, so this [behavior] is not denied of them. The sentence is an initiating [independent] statement, or it is a circumstantial clause; the continuity implied by the preceding [verb] does not negate that. It is said that the intent is: they turned away in their criminality while being averse with their hearts.
