(An orphan of near kinship)

(An orphan of near kinship): That is, of relationship. It is also a verbal noun (masdar mimi) derived from qurba (closeness) in lineage. It is said, "So-and-so is a possessor of my qaraba (kinship) and a possessor of my maqraba (near kinship)," meaning the same. Al-Zajjaj said: "To say 'So-and-so is my qaraba' is poor usage, because qaraba is a verbal noun." He said:

The stranger weeps over him, not knowing him, While the one of his own kinship in the neighborhood is joyous.

In this, there is a point of discussion. In feeding such a person, one combines charity with the upholding of kinship ties, and in both actions lies the reward that is known. It has been said that it is not restricted to a relative by lineage, but rather includes anyone who has a closeness by way of neighborhood.
