ﱓ ﱔ ﱕ
And [by] the day when it displays it
Tafsir
Verse range: 91:3
And the day when it reveals it: that is, the day reveals the sun, meaning it makes it appear; for it becomes unveiled and visible once the day spreads out and a portion of it has passed. Thus, the attribution is metaphorical, similar to the attribution in expressions such as "his day became sharp [active/busy]."
It is also said that the objective pronoun refers to the earth, and it is said that it refers to the world, meaning the face of the earth and what is upon it. It is also said that it refers to the darkness, and "reveals it" in this case means "removes it." The omission of the referent in these latter views is due to it being understood. The first view is superior, due to the explicit mention of the referent and the consistency of the pronouns.
Some have permitted that the hidden nominative pronoun in "reveals it" refers to Allah, the Almighty and Majestic; as if it were said: "And the day when Allah, the Exalted, reveals the sun." This would mean that He, glory be to Him, swore by the day in its most perfect state, though you see how that is.
