But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need

As for him who is stingy

As for him who is stingy with his wealth and does not expend it in the way of good—and it has been said: who is stingy in performing what he has been commanded, though there is room for objection in that—and considers himself self-sufficient, meaning he is ascetic regarding what is with the Almighty and Exalted, as if he is independent of Him, Glory be to Him, and therefore does not fear Him, the Majestic and Exalted; or he considers himself self-sufficient with the desires of the worldly life in place of the bliss of the Hereafter, because it is in contrast to [the verse] "and feared [God]," just as the saying of the Exalted is [in contrast to the subsequent verse]...
