Tafsir of Al Imran 3:180

Surah Al Imran 3:180

ﳂ ﳃ ﳄ ﳅ ﳆ ﳇ ﳈ ﳉ ﳊ ﳋ ﳌ ﳍ ﳎ ﳏ ﳐ ﳑ ﳒ ﳓ ﳔ ﳕ ﳖ ﳗ ﳘ ﳙ ﳚ ﳛ ﳜ ﳝ ﳞ ﳟ ﳠ ﳡ ﳢ ﳣ

And let not those who [greedily] withhold what Allah has given them of His bounty ever think that it is better for them. Rather, it is worse for them. Their necks will be encircled by what they withheld on the Day of Resurrection. And to Allah belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth. And Allah, with what you do, is [fully] Acquainted.

Asbab al-Nuzul

Verse range: 3:180

Open in Qurani

(And let not those who hoard up that which Allah hath bestowed upon them of His bounty think…) [3:180]. Most Qur’anic commentators are unanimous that this verse was revealed about those who refused to pay the poor-due (Zakat). ‘Atiyyah al-‘Awfi also related that Ibn ‘Abbas mentioned that this verse was revealed about the Jewish rabbis who concealed the description and prophethood of Muhammad, Allah bless him and give him peace. ‘Hoard up’ here means the concealment of knowledge which Allah, exalted is He, had bestowed upon them.
