Jonah (10:108) Say: "O people..."

Know that when the Almighty established the aforementioned proofs concerning Monotheism (Tawhid), Prophethood, and the Hereafter, He concluded this Surah with this noble and sublime closing statement, which demonstrates that He alone is sovereign over creation, origination, formation, and invention.

There are two interpretations regarding this verse:

  1. The First View: Whoever He decreed in eternity to be guided, will indeed be guided. And whoever He decreed to be misguided, will likewise be so, and there is no means to avert it.
  1. The Second View (Appropriate for the Mu'tazilites): The Judge (Al-Qadi) stated that the Almighty clarified that He has perfected the Law (Shari'ah), removed all excuses, and cut off all justifications. Thus, {Whoever is guided, is guided for [the benefit of] himself; and whoever goes astray, goes astray to his own detriment. And I am not over you a guardian [or trustee]} (10:108). Therefore, I am not obligated to exert more effort in bringing you to the great reward and saving you from painful punishment than what I have already done.

Ibn Abbas said that this verse is abrogated by the verse concerning fighting (Qital).
