Explanation of the Argument

This is the second proof presented. Its structure is based on what God Almighty has explained in other verses regarding the manner of initiating human creation—from the drop of fluid, the clinging clot, and the chewed lump—and how He will bring it back. It also refers to the initiation of the creation of the heavens and the earth. Since these stages have been detailed elsewhere, God suffices here by mentioning them summarily.

There are several questions regarding this verse:

First Question: What is the benefit of presenting this proof in the form of a question and inquiry?

Answer: When a statement is clear and evident, presenting it as an inquiry, leaving the answer to the respondent, makes it more emphatic and impactful on the heart.

Second Question: The people were denying resurrection and reassembly. How can this be used as proof against them?

Answer: God Almighty has previously presented in this Surah evidence pointing to this: the necessity of distinguishing between the doer of good and the doer of evil. This evidence is strong and apparent, which a rational person cannot deny. Because of its complete strength and clarity, it is relied upon, whether the opponent agrees with it or not.

Third Question: Why was the Messenger commanded to acknowledge this? Proof is only established if the opponent admits it.

Answer: Since the evidence is clear and manifest, when it is presented to the opponent in the form of an inquiry, and the opponent himself confirms that it is so, this serves as an indication that the matter has reached such a degree of clarity that the opponent's affirmation is not required. Whether he affirms or denies, the matter is established and evident.

Regarding the phrase "فأنى تؤفكون" (Then how are you turned away?), it signifies astonishment at their deviation from this clear matter. Their deviation is caused by whims, blind imitation, or weak suspicion, leading them to oppose the truth. This is because claiming that idols are gods is a lie and falsehood, and engaging in their worship, when they do not deserve it, resembles falsehood.

| {Say: Are there any of your partners who guides to the truth? Say: It is Allah who guides to the truth. So is He who guides to the truth more worthy to be followed, or he who does not guide unless he is guided? What is the matter with you? How do you judge? *And most of them follow nothing but conjecture. Indeed, conjecture is no substitute for the truth, not even a little. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing of what they do.)}
