Surah Yunus (10): Verse 6

[6] Indeed, in the alternation...

Know that the Almighty first established proof for Monotheism (Tawhid) and the principles of divinity:

  1. By the creation of the heavens and the earth.
  2. By the conditions of the sun and the moon.
  3. In this verse, by the benefits resulting from the alternation of night and day. (This has been previously explained in Surah Al-Baqarah regarding the verse: {Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth...} [Al 'Imran: 9]).
  4. By everything that Allah has created in the heavens and the earth.

These created phenomena are categorized into four divisions:

  1. Conditions occurring in the four elements: This includes the states of thunder, lightning, clouds, rain, and snow. It also encompasses the conditions of the seas, the ebb and flow of tides, thunderbolts, earthquakes, and sinkholes.
  2. Conditions of minerals: These are numerous and wondrous.
  3. Differences in the states of vegetation.
  4. Differences in the states of animals.

All these four categories are encompassed within the Almighty's statement: {And what Allah has created in the heavens and the earth...}. A comprehensive explanation of these conditions is impossible even in a thousand volumes; rather, everything the wise have mentioned regarding the conditions of these world categories is but a brief excerpt of this topic.

Then, after mentioning these proofs, the Almighty said: {These are signs for people who use reason (or: are pious/fearful)}.

He specified the signs for the Muttaqin (those who guard themselves against evil/the pious) because they fear the ultimate consequence (the Hereafter). This fear prompts them to reflect and contemplate.

Al-Qaffal said: Whoever reflects upon these conditions knows that the world was created for people's hardship therein, and that its Creator and their Creator have not neglected them, but rather made it a dwelling for action. If this is the case, then there must be commands and prohibitions, followed by reward and punishment, so that the doer of good may be distinguished from the doer of evil. Therefore, these conditions, in reality, point to the validity of affirming the Originator (Al-Mabda') and affirming the Resurrection (Al-Ma'ad).

[7] Indeed, those who do not expect to meet Us, and are content with the life of this world and feel secure therein, and those who are heedless of Our signs—

Those, their refuge will be the Fire, because of what they used to earn.
