Tafsir of Al-Adiyat 100:10

Surah Al-'Adiyat (100): Verse 10

{وَحُصِّلَ مَا فِي الصُّدُورِ}

Translation and Exegesis:

And what is in the breasts will be brought forth (or made manifest/gathered).

• Abū 'Ubaydah said: It means what is in the breasts will be distinguished (or separated).
• Al-Layth said: Al-Hāṣil (that which remains) of anything is what stays firm, while the rest departs. Taḥṣīl (the act of bringing forth) is the distinguishing of what remains. The noun is al-Ḥaṣīlah (the collected yield).
  • Labeed said (in poetry):

    Every man will know his striving one day, When the yields (al-Ḥaṣā’il) are gathered before God.

There are several interpretations (wujūh) for this verse:

1. Meaning 1 (Gathering): It means that what is in the breasts will be gathered in the records (of deeds).
2. Meaning 2 (Distinction): It necessitates the distinction between the obligatory (wājib), the recommended (mandūb), the permissible (mubāḥ), the disliked (makrūh), and the forbidden (maḥẓūr). This is why a sieve (minḵal) is called al-Muḥaṣṣil (the separator/sifter).
3. Meaning 3 (Revelation of Secrets): Often, a person's inner state contradicts their outward appearance. On the Day of Resurrection, secrets will be uncovered, veils will be torn away, and what is hidden in the innermost parts will be revealed, as stated: {The Day when the secrets will be tested} (86:9).

The Lesson of Admonition (Wa'ẓ):

The admonition here is that you prepare for things that yield no benefit. You build elaborate structures (maqābirah - perhaps referring to grand tombs or worldly preparations), purchase the coffin, tailor the shroud, and the old woman spins the burial cloth. All this, it is said, is for the worms! Where then is the portion for the Merciful (God)?

Consider a pregnant woman preparing clothes for her child. If you ask her, "You have no child, so what is this preparation?" She replies, "Will not what is in my belly be brought forth?" The Lord says to you: Will not what is in the belly of the earth also be brought forth? So, where is the preparation (for that)?

• It was also recited as {wa ḥuṣṣila} (with fatḥ and takhfīf on the ṣād), meaning "it became apparent/manifested."

! 7 < { إِنَّ رَبَّهُم بِهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ لَّخَبِيرٌ } . > 7 !

Translation:

{Indeed, their Lord, that Day, will be fully aware of them.}

Then He said: {Indeed, their Lord, that Day, will be fully aware of them.}
