ﱐ ﱑ ﱒ ﱓ ﱔ ﱕ ﱖ ﱗ

But does he not know that when the contents of the graves are scattered

Al-'Adiyat (The Chargers): (9) Does he not know when...

There are two issues concerning this verse:

Issue 1: The Meaning of $\{ \text{Bu'thirat} \} (Stirred Up)

The meaning of { \text{Bu'thirat} } (stirred up/scattered) has already been discussed in relation to the Almighty's saying: { \text{Wa idhā al-qubūru bu'thirat} } (And when the graves are stirred up). We mentioned that the meaning of { \text{Bu'thirat} } is resurrection, agitation, and bringing forth. It has also been recited as { \text{Buḥthirat} }.

Issue 2: Grammatical Inquiries

One might ask: Why did He say { \text{Bu'thira mā fī al-qubūri} } (What is in the graves is brought forth) and not { \text{Bu'thira man fī al-qubūri} } (Who is in the graves is brought forth)?

Furthermore, after mentioning what is in the graves ({ \text{mā fī al-qubūri} } - what is in the graves), why did He then say { \text{inna rabbahum bihim} } (Indeed, their Lord, that Day, is with them) and not { \text{inna rabbahā bihā} } (Indeed, their Lord is with it [the graves])?

The Answer to the First Question:

  1. The things in the earth that are not accountable beings (non-rational creatures) are more numerous, so the statement is phrased based on the majority.
  2. Alternatively, it can be said that at the moment they are resurrected, they are not yet living, rational beings. They only become so after the resurrection. Therefore, the first pronoun refers to non-rational beings, while the second pronoun refers to rational beings.
