ﱁ ﱂ ﱃ ﱄ ﱅ ﱆ ﱇ ﱈ ﱉ ﱊ ﱋ ﱌ ﱍ ﱎ ﱏ ﱐ ﱑ ﱒ ﱓ ﱔ ﱕ ﱖ
So do not be in doubt, [O Muhammad], as to what these [polytheists] are worshipping. They worship not except as their fathers worshipped before. And indeed, We will give them their share undiminished.
Tafsir
Verse range: 11:109
[109] So be not in doubt concerning what they worship...
Know that when the Almighty explained the stories of the idolaters, He followed that by describing the states of the wretched and the states of the fortunate. Then, He addressed the Messenger (peace be upon him) concerning the state of the disbelievers among his people, saying:
{فلا تك في مرية} (So be not in doubt).
The meaning is: "Do not be," but the nūn (the final letter of takūna) was omitted due to frequent usage. Since the nūn occurs at the end of the word, only the nasal sound (ghunnah) remains upon utterance, so they rightfully dropped it. The meaning is: Do not be in doubt regarding what they worship, that it neither harms nor benefits.
{ما يعبدون إلا كما يعبد ءاباؤهم من قبل} (They worship nothing except as their fathers worshipped before them).
This means they resemble their forefathers in adhering to ignorance and blind imitation (Taqlīd).
{وإنا لموفوهم نصيبهم غير منقوص} (And indeed, We will give them their full portion, undiminished).
This can imply: We will give them their portion, meaning what is due to them of punishment.
It can also imply: Even though they disbelieve and turn away from the truth, We will give them their portion of worldly provisions and blessings.
Another possibility is that it means: We will give them their portion of the removal of excuses, the elimination of justifications, the manifestation of proofs, the sending of Messengers, and the revelation of Books.
It is also possible that all these meanings are intended.
[110] And We did indeed give Moses the Scripture, and there was disagreement about it. And if not for a word that had preceded from your Lord, it would have been judged between them. And indeed, they are in grave doubt concerning it.
[111] And indeed, each one—We will fully compensate them for their deeds. Indeed, He is ever, with what they do, Acquainted.
