Surah Hud (11:48)
**قِيلَ يَا نُوحُ اهْبِطْ بِسَلَامٍ مِنَّا وَبَرَكَاتٍ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى أُمَمٍ مِمَّنْ مَعَكَ وَأُمَمٌ سَنُمَتِّعُهُمْ ثُمَّ يَمَسُّهُمْ مِنَّا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ**
(It was said, "O Noah, disembark [from the Ark] with peace from Us and blessings upon you and upon communities [descended] from those with you. And [for] other communities, We will grant them enjoyment [of this world], then a painful punishment from Us will touch them.")
Issues within the Verse:
Issue 1: The Meaning of "Disembark" (اهبط - Ihbiṭ)
It is reported that the Ark rested upon Mount Judi. Therefore, Noah and his people must have exited the Ark and descended from the mountain to the flat land.
The command "Disembark" (اهبط) can imply two things:
- An order to exit the Ark onto the land of the mountain.
- An order to descend from the mountain down to the level ground.
Issue 2: The Promise of Peace (بِسَلَامٍ) and Blessing (وَبَرَكَاتٍ)
Allah first promised him safety/peace, and then blessing.
A. Regarding the Promise of Safety (بِسَلَامٍ): This has two interpretations:
- Relief from Spiritual Threat: In the preceding verse, Allah informed that Noah (peace be upon him) repented for his slip-up and supplicated: $\text{{وَإِلَّا تَغْفِرْ لِي وَتَرْحَمْنِي أَكُنْ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ}} (Hud: 47). This supplication is identical to that of Adam (peace be upon him) upon repenting: \text{{رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنْفُسَنَا وَإِنْ لَمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ}} (Al-A'raf: 23). Since Noah had made such a plea, he needed assurance from Allah regarding safety from divine threat and warning. Being told, "O Noah, disembark with peace from Us," granted him security from all religious calamities.
- Relief from Material Fear: Since the Flood was universal, when Noah exited the Ark, he realized that nothing useful—no plants or animals—remained on Earth. He would naturally fear how he would live and sustain himself with food and drink. When Allah said, "Disembark with peace from Us," that fear was removed, as it indicates the removal of afflictions, which only occurs alongside security and abundant provision.
B. Regarding the Promise of Blessing (وَبَرَكَاتٍ):
After promising safety, Allah followed it with a promise of blessing, which signifies permanence, stability, attainment of hope, and increase. This is derived from the root meaning of barakah (e.g., the stability of water in a well, or the blessing of camels). Tabarak (Blessed) means His glorification is established and permanent.
The commentators differed on the interpretation of this permanence and stability:
- First Opinion (Noah as the Second Adam): Allah made Noah the father of humanity, as all who remained were from his lineage. Some commentators suggest that upon exiting the Ark, everyone who was with him, but not of his lineage, died, and progeny only resulted from his descendants. Others hold that only those of his lineage were on the Ark to begin with. In either case, all creation originated from him and his children. The proof is Allah’s statement: \text{{وَجَعَلْنَا ذُرِّيَّتَهُ هُمُ الْبَاقِينَ}} (As-Saffat: 77). Thus, Noah was the "Lesser Adam," and this is the meaning of the promised blessings.
- Second Opinion (Continuity of Well-being): Since Allah promised him safety from afflictions, He also promised that the means for safety, comfort, and leisure would be increasing, stable, and established.
C. Regarding the Communities (وَعَلَى أُمَمٍ مِمَّنْ مَعَكَ):
After honoring Noah with safety and blessing, Allah explained the status of those who were with him. There are three views on the meaning of "and upon communities [descended] from those with you":
- The Survivors: It refers to the groups of people who were saved with him. They were made into nations/communities because, at that time, they were the only humans left on Earth.
- The Descendants: It refers to those with him in terms of lineage and procreation. The proof is that only the believers were with him, and Allah described them as few: \text{{وَمَا آمَنَ مَعَهُ إِلَّا قَلِيلٌ}} (Hud: 40).
- The Present and Future: It refers to the total number of those present plus those who would be born later.
The preferred view is the second one (descendants). The preposition min (مِن) in \text{{مِمَّنْ مَعَكَ}} indicates the origin (ibtida' al-ghayah), meaning: "And upon communities arising from those who were with you."
D. Division of the Descendants:
Allah divided the nations arising from those with Noah into two categories:
- The Blessed (Believers): Those who were included in the peace and blessings extended to Noah.
- The Doomed (Disbelievers): Nations whom Allah would grant enjoyment for a period in this world, but then a painful punishment from Him would touch them.
The commentators state that this safety includes every believing man and woman until the Day of Judgment. Similarly, the enjoyment and the painful punishment apply to every disbelieving man and woman until the Day of Judgment.
E. The Significance of the Divine Source of Blessing:
The scholars of truth note that Allah magnified Noah's status by attributing the safety and blessings directly to Himself: "with peace from Us (مِنَّا)." This indicates that the truthful ones (Siddiqin) do not rejoice in a blessing merely because it is a blessing, but because it originates from the Truth (Al-Haqq). Their joy is in the Truth, their pursuit is the Truth, and their orientation is toward the Truth.
This is a lofty station known only to Allah's elite:
- Joy in safety and blessing as safety and blessing is the portion of the common people.
- Joy in safety and blessing as being from the Truth is the portion of the Near Ones (Muqarrabin).
Some say that whoever prefers Gnosis ('Irfan) for the sake of Gnosis has adopted the second view. Whoever prefers Gnosis not for itself, but for the sake of the Known One (Al-Ma'ruf), has plunged into the depths of arrival.
Regarding the people of punishment: \text{{وَأُمَمٌ سَنُمَتِّعُهُمْ ثُمَّ يَمَسُّهُمْ مِنَّا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ}}$. Allah decreed that they would receive a share of worldly enjoyment. This points to the baseness of the world (khassasah). When Allah mentioned the state of the believers, He did not mention whether He would give them the world or not. But when mentioning the disbelievers, He mentioned that He would give them the world. This is a great indication of the lowliness of physical happiness and an encouragement toward spiritual stations.
Surah Hud (11:49)
**تِلْكَ مِنْ أَنْبَاءِ الْغَيْبِ نُوحِيهَا إِلَيْكَ وَمَا كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُهَا أَنْتَ وَلَا قَوْمُكَ مِنْ قَبْلِ هَذَا فَاصْبِرْ إِنَّ الْعَاقِبَةَ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ**
(That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal to you, [O Muhammad]. You did not know it, nor did your people, before this. So be patient; indeed, the good end belongs to the pious.)
