Surah Al-Baqarah 2:105

ﲰ ﲱ ﲲ ﲳ ﲴ ﲵ ﲶ ﲷ ﲸ ﲹ ﲺ ﲻ ﲼ ﲽ ﲾ ﲿ ﳀ ﳁ ﳂ ﳃ ﳄ ﳅ ﳆ ﳇ ﳈ ﳉ ﳊ

Neither those who disbelieve from the People of the Scripture nor the polytheists wish that any good should be sent down to you from your Lord. But Allah selects for His mercy whom He wills, and Allah is the possessor of great bounty.

Al-Baqarah: (105 - 106) Those who disbelieve would not wish...

Having explained the state of the Jews and the disbelievers in terms of enmity and obstinacy, the Almighty warns the believers against them, saying: {Those who disbelieve would not wish} (2:105).

Thus, He negates the presence of affection and love in their hearts for anything that manifests the excellence of the believers. Herein lie two issues:

Issue 1: The Function of the Prepositions

The first preposition (مِنْ - min, "from") is for specification (bayān), because "those who disbelieve" (al-ladhīna kafarū) is a general category encompassing two types: the People of the Book and the polytheists. The proof for this is the Almighty's saying: {Those who disbelieved from among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists} (Al-Bayyinah: 1).

The second preposition (عَنْ - ʿan, "from") is for the ultimate extent (mubtada' al-ghāyah) of goodness, signifying the complete removal of goodness from them.

The third preposition (مِنْ - min, "from") indicates the beginning of the limit/source (i.e., the source of the goodness).

Issue 2: The Meaning of "Goodness" (Khayr)

The "goodness" (al-khayr) here refers to the Revelation (al-waḥy), as does the "mercy" (al-raḥmah). The proof for this is the Almighty's saying: {Do they distribute the mercy of your Lord?} (Az-Zukhruf: 32).

The meaning is that they consider themselves more deserving of receiving revelation, so they envy you, and they do not love that anything of the Revelation should be sent down upon you.

Then, the Sublime One clarifies that this envy will have no effect in removing that [Revelation], for He exclusively reserves His mercy and favor for whomever He wills.


{We do not abrogate any verse or cause it to be forgotten except that We bring forth one better than it or similar to it. Do you not know that Allah is over all things competent?} (2:106)
