Al-Furqan: (73) And those who, when reminded...

The author of Al-Kashshaf states regarding His saying: {they do not fall down upon them deaf and blind}: This is not a negation of the falling down (khurūr), but rather an affirmation of it, and a negation of deafness and blindness. It is like saying, "Zayd does not meet me greeting," where the negation is of the greeting, not the meeting.

The meaning is that when they are reminded of the verses, they fall upon them eagerly to listen, and they turn toward the one reminding them. In their eagerness, they are listeners with attentive ears and seeing with observant eyes. This is unlike those who are reminded of the verses, and you see them falling upon them and turning toward the reminder, showing intense eagerness to listen, yet they are like the deaf and the blind, as they neither understand what is in them nor see it, like the hypocrites.

The Ninth Attribute

{73} And those who say, "Our Lord, grant us from among our spouses and our offspring comfort for our eyes, and make us an example for the righteous."
