Al-Furqan: (75) Those will be recompensed with the Lofts...
Benefits Mentioned:
The benefits are stated in His saying:
And what is meant is: "Those will be recompensed with the Lofts (Al-Ghurufāt)." The evidence for this is His saying: {And they will be in the chambers, safe} (Saba: 37), and He said: {They will have chambers built above chambers} (Az-Zumar: 20).
- Linguistically: Al-Ghurfa (the Loft) means the high place, and every elevated structure is called a ghurfa. What is intended here are the high ranks.
- Exegesis: The commentators said that Al-Ghurfa is a name for Paradise. Thus, the meaning is that they will be recompensed with Paradise, which comprises many gardens. Some recited it as: "Those will be recompensed in the Loft (singular)."
Regarding His saying: {because they were patient} (بِمَا صَبَرُوا), there are two points of discussion:
First Point of Discussion:
Those who hold that Paradise is attained through deserving action used this verse as evidence. They argue that the *Bā'* (the preposition 'bi') in **{because they were patient}** indicates this deservingness. If attainment were solely through promise, this phrasing would not be appropriate.
Second Point of Discussion:
Patience is mentioned, but what they were patient *from* is not specified. This is done to encompass every type of patience. This includes:
1. Their patience regarding the hardships of deep reflection and argumentation in knowing God Almighty.
2. Their patience regarding the hardships of obedience.
3. Their patience regarding refraining from desires.
4. Their patience regarding the harm inflicted by the polytheists.
5. Their patience regarding striving (Jihad) and poverty, and the discipline of the soul.
Therefore, there is no basis for the view that only patience regarding poverty is intended, because if these qualities (reflection, obedience, etc.) are present alongside wealth, the one possessing them deserves Paradise just as one deserves it through poverty.
Secondly: Glorification (Taʿẓīm):
{They will be greeted therein with a greeting and peace.} (وَيُلَقَّوْنَ فِيهَا تَحِيَّةً وَسَلَامًا)
- It has been recited as {Yulaqqawna} (passive voice, like in {And He will meet them with freshness and joy} [Al-Insan: 11]).
- It has also been recited as {Yulaqqawna} (active voice, like in {He will repay them with a severe punishment} [Al-Furqan: 68]).
Meaning of Terms:
- At-Tahiyyah (Greeting) is supplication for longevity/endurance.
- As-Salām (Peace) is supplication for safety.
The essence of the Tahiyyah reverts to the fact that the bliss of Paradise is everlasting and unending. The essence of As-Salām reverts to that bliss being pure, free from any taint of harm.
Furthermore, this greeting and peace could originate from:
- God Almighty, due to His saying: {A saying, "Peace," from a Merciful Lord} (Ya-Sin: 58).
- The Angels, due to His saying: **{And the angels will enter upon them from every gate, “Peace be upon you”}** (Ar-Ra'd: 23-24).
- Some of them upon others (i.e., the inhabitants greeting each other).
{Abiding therein; excellent it is as a settlement and as a resting place.} (خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا حَسُنَتْ مُسْتَقَرًّا وَمُقَامًا)
