An-Naml: (89–90) Whoever Comes with a Good Deed...

Know that after the Almighty discussed the signs of the Hour, He then explained the conditions of the accountable beings after the Resurrection. The accountable person is either obedient or disobedient.

As for the obedient one, he is the one who comes with a good deed (al-hasanah). He has two matters concerning this:

1. He has what is better than it: This refers to the reward.
   • Objection: If the good deed includes knowing God (ta'ala) and sincerity in acts of obedience, how can it be permissible to say that eating and drinking (the reward) is better than knowing God?
   • Answer (Part 1): The reward for theoretical knowledge attained in this world is the necessary knowledge attained in the Hereafter, and the pleasure of gazing upon His Noble Countenance (subhanahu wa ta'ala). Proofs indicate that the noblest of happinesses is this pleasure. If the verse were not interpreted this way, it would necessitate that eating and drinking are better than knowing God, which is false.
   • Answer (Part 2): The reward is better than the deed because the reward is everlasting, while the deed is transient. Furthermore, the deed is the act of the servant, whereas the reward is the act of God.
   • Answer (Part 3): "He has what is better than it" (falahu khayrun minha) means he has a benefit resulting from it, which is Paradise.

2. The Second Question: The word al-hasanah (good deed) is singular and indefinite. It is established that an indefinite noun does not imply generality; rather, the fulfillment of a single instance is sufficient for its realization. If this is the case, we should interpret it as referring to the most perfect and highest form of good deeds, which is faith (al-Iman). This is why Ibn Abbas said that one instance of a good deed is the testimony of faith (kalimat ash-shahadah). This necessitates certainty that the people of faith will not be punished.
   • The Answer: That "better thing" (khayr) is that their punishment will not be eternal.

The Second Matter concerning the obedient is that they will be safe from all fright (faza'c). This contradicts the view of some who said that the terrors of the Hour encompass both the believer and the disbeliever.

• Objection: Does not the Almighty say at the beginning of the verse: "And [mention] the Day He will gather them and that which they worship besides Allah and say, 'Was it you who misguided My servants, or did they [themselves] stray from the way?'" (Qur'an 27:87 - *Note: The excerpt quotes a different verse reference here, likely referring to the preceding verse 87: "And [mention] the Day He will gather them and that which they worship besides Allah and say, 'Was it you who misguided My servants, or did they [themselves] stray from the way?'" - but the context implies the fear mentioned in 27:87: "And [mention] the Day He will gather them and that which they worship besides Allah and say, 'Was it you who misguided My servants, or did they [themselves] stray from the way?'" - The actual verse 87 is: "And [mention] the Day He will gather them and that which they worship besides Allah and say, 'Was it you who misguided My servants, or did they [themselves] stray from the way?'"
