And when they board a ship, they supplicate Allah, sincere to Him in religion. But when He delivers them to the land, at once they associate others with Him

Al-Ankabut (The Spider): (65)

**"But when they ride on the ships, they call upon Allah, making their devotion sincere to Him only. But when He delivers them to the land, behold, they return to associating others [with Him]."**

Interpretation Note:

This verse points out that the obstacle preventing people from recognizing and adhering to pure Monotheism (Tawhid) is their attachment to worldly life.

The explanation for this is:

  • When their hope in worldly matters is cut off (i.e., during peril at sea), they revert to their innate disposition (fitra), which testifies to Monotheism. They then worship Allah sincerely and exclusively.
  • However, when Allah saves them and grants them respite on land, they revert to their previous state of loving the world and begin to associate others with Him in worship.

**"So that they may disbelieve in what We have given them, and so that they may enjoy [themselves]. But they are going to know [the consequence]."**
