Surah Al 'Imran (3:177)

"Indeed, those who have purchased disbelief for faith will not harm Allah at all..."

Scholarly Note on Interpretation:

We must consider that if we interpret the preceding verse (3:176) as referring to the hypocrites and the Jews, it is equally plausible to interpret this verse (3:177) as referring to the apostates (those who revert from Islam).

Conversely, it is also possible to interpret the first verse as referring to the apostates and this verse as referring to the Jews.

The meaning of "purchasing disbelief for faith" implies that they previously knew the Prophet (peace be upon him) and believed in him before his mission, even seeking his aid against their enemies. When he was sent as a Prophet, they disbelieved in him and abandoned their previous state. It is as if they gave away faith and took disbelief in exchange, similar to how a buyer gives something and receives something else in return.

It is also plausible to apply this verse to the hypocrites. This is because when they were with the believers, they outwardly showed faith, but when they secluded themselves with their devils (associates), they disbelieved and abandoned faith. This act is like purchasing disbelief in exchange for faith.

The Wisdom Behind Repeating the Phrase "Will Not Harm Allah at All":

Allah Almighty stated in the first verse: "{Indeed, those who hasten to disbelief will never harm Allah in anything...}" (Al 'Imran: 176). And He states in this verse: "{Indeed, those who have purchased disbelief for faith will not harm Allah at all...}"

There are several benefits to this repetition:

  1. Evidence of Instability: Those who purchase disbelief for faith must have been disbelievers initially, then embraced faith, and then reverted to disbelief. This indicates extreme confusion, weakness of opinion, and a lack of steadfastness. Such a person poses no threat, inspires no awe, and has absolutely no power to inflict harm on others.
  2. Evidence of Folly: Matters of religion are the most important and greatest of affairs. A person would not undertake an action or omission in such a critical matter without deep reflection and extensive thought. Yet, these individuals proceed with action or omission regarding this great matter based on the flimsiest of reasons and weakest of motives. This demonstrates their lack of intellect and extreme foolishness. A wise person does not pay attention to such individuals.
  3. Evidence of Worldly Motivation: Most of them dispute with you concerning religion not based on genuine doubts, but rather based on envy and contention over worldly status. Whoever possesses such a meager intellect—selling the great happiness of the Hereafter for a small portion of the world—is the height of foolishness and is incapable of inflicting harm on others.

This is the wisdom behind repeating this statement, and Allah knows best His intended meaning.

"{And let not those who disbelieve ever think that the respite We give them is better for themselves. We only give them respite so that they may increase in sin, and for them is a humiliating punishment.}" (Al 'Imran: 178)
