Āl 'Imrān: (184 - 185) Fa-in kadhabūka...

There are several interpretations:

1. First View: If they deny you regarding your claim that previous prophets brought the Qurbān (offering) that the fire consumed, and they denied and killed those prophets, then messengers before you—like Noah, Hūd, Ṣāliḥ, Ibrāhīm, Shu'ayb, and others—were also denied.
2. Second View (Likely Stronger): If they deny you concerning the very foundation of prophethood and the Law (Sharī'ah), then messengers before you were also denied. This view is perhaps stronger because:
   • Allāh did not specify the denial.
   • Denial of the core prophethood is a greater offense.
   • This view encompasses the specific denial mentioned in the argument (the ḥujjah).

The purpose of this discourse is to console the Messenger of Allāh (PBUH) and clarify that this denial is not unique to him among the prophets. Rather, it is the custom of all disbelievers to deny and slander all prophets, even though the prophets before him had clear miracles and revealed Books, just like you. Despite this, they patiently endured the harm inflicted upon them by their nations for the sake of delivering the message. Therefore, be one who follows their path in this regard.

This serves as consolation because affliction, when shared, becomes easier to bear.

• Al-Bayyināt (The Clear Proofs): These are the arguments and miracles.
• Az-Zubar (The Scriptures): This is the plural of Zabūr. Az-Zabūr means the Book, in the sense of mazbūr (that which is written). It is said: Zabartu al-Kitāb (I wrote the Book). Every book is a Zabūr.

Al-Zajjāj said: Az-Zubur refers to every book containing wisdom. Based on this, it is more likely that the meaning of Zabūr derives from Zabr meaning "reprimand" or "deterrence." It is said: Zabartu ar-rajul (I deterred the man) from falsehood. A book is named Zabūr because of the deterrents it contains against contradicting the truth. This is why the Psalms of David (Zabūr Dāwūd) were named so, due to the abundance of admonitions and warnings within them.

Ibn 'Abbās recited: {wa bi-z-Zubur} (and with the Scriptures), repeating the preposition bā' for emphasis.

• Al-Munīr (The Illuminating): This comes from the saying: Anartu ash-shay’ (I clarified the thing).

In this verse, there are two issues:

Issue 1: The Meaning of the Scriptures

The Bayyināt (Clear Proofs) refer to miracles, and then Az-Zubar (Scriptures) and Al-Kitāb (The Book) are mentioned alongside them. This implies that the miracles of those prophets were distinct from their Books. This suggests that none of the previous prophets had a Book that was itself a miracle. The Torah, the Gospel, the Psalms, and the Scrolls were not miracles in themselves. However, the Qur'an is both a Book and a miracle, which is one of the unique characteristics of the Prophet (PBUH).

Issue 2: The Conjunction of Al-Kitāb Al-Munīr with Az-Zubar

The conjunction of Al-Kitāb Al-Munīr (The Illuminating Book) with Az-Zubar is appropriate even though the Illuminating Book must necessarily be one of the Zubar. This conjunction is elegant because Al-Kitāb Al-Munīr is the most noble of the Books and the best of the Zubar. This type of conjunction is similar to what occurs in: {And [mention] when We took from the prophets their covenant, and from you, and from Noah} (Al-Aḥzāb: 7), and {Whoever is an enemy to Allāh or His angels or His messengers or Gabriel or Michael} (Al-Baqarah: 98).

The added honor might be because it encompasses the entirety of the Law, or because it remains preserved until the end of time. Alternatively, Az-Zubar might refer to the Scrolls, while Al-Kitāb Al-Munīr refers to the Torah, the Gospel, and the Psalms.

Know that the purpose of this verse is to strongly reinforce the consolation of the Prophet (PBUH) and to remove sorrow from his heart in two ways:

1. The Outcome is Death: The end result for everyone is death. These worries and sorrows will pass away and nothing will remain of them. A wise person does not pay attention to sorrow that is destined to vanish.
2. The Next Abode: After this world is an abode where the righteous will be distinguished from the wicked, and each will receive the appropriate recompense for their deeds.

Both of these points are extremely powerful in removing grief and sorrow from the hearts of the rational. In this verse, there are issues:

Issue 1: The Scope of "Every Soul"

A question arises regarding {Every soul will taste death}: Allāh is sometimes referred to as Nafs (Soul), as in: {You know what is within My soul, but I do not know what is within Your soul} (Al-Mā’idah: 110). Furthermore, Nafs and Dhāt (Essence) are synonymous. If this is the case, inanimate objects (Jumādāt) fall under the term Nafs, implying that death must encompass inanimate objects. Also, Allāh says: {And the Trumpet will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will fall down dead, except whom Allāh wills} (Az-Zumar: 68), which implies that those excepted do not die. This generality implies everyone dies. Furthermore, it implies that the inhabitants of Paradise and the inhabitants of Hellfire must die, as they are all Nufūs (souls).

The Answer: The intended meaning here refers to the accountable beings (Mukallafūn) present in the Abode of Trial (Dār at-Taklīf). This is evidenced by the subsequent verse: {So whoever is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has certainly succeeded} (Āl 'Imrān: 185). This consequence only applies to them. Moreover, a general statement remains authoritative even after a specific context has been established.

Issue 2: The Grammar of Dhā’iqah (Tasting)

Dhā’iqah is the active participle derived from dhawq (tasting). When an active participle is in a construct state (iḍāfah) with a noun, and it is intended to refer to the past, it must be in the genitive case (majrūr), like saying: Zaydun ḍāribu 'Amrin ams (Zayd was striking 'Amr yesterday). If it is intended for the present or future, both genitive and accusative cases are permissible. For example: Huwa ḍāribu Zaydin ghadan (He is striking Zayd tomorrow) or Ḍāriban Zaydan ghadan. Allāh says: {Are they the revealers of harm?} (Az-Zumar: 38), which was read in both ways because it refers to the future.

It is narrated that Al-Ḥasan read it as {dhā’iqatu al-mawta} (with tanwīn and the accusative case for al-mawt), which is the original form. Al-A'mash read it as {dhā’iqata al-mawti} (omitting tanwīn while keeping the accusative case), similar to the poetry:

Wa lā dhākiru Allāha illā qalīlā (And none remember Allāh except a few).

Issue 3: Philosophical View on Death

The philosophers claim that death is necessarily incurred upon having this bodily life. This is because bodily life is only sustained by natural moisture (ruṭūbah gharīziyyah) and natural heat (ḥarārah gharīziyyah). The natural heat acts to dissolve the natural moisture. This process continues until the original moisture is depleted, the natural heat is extinguished, and death occurs. Thus, death is necessary for this life according to this reasoning.

They argue that the statement {Every soul will taste death} indicates that souls do not die with the death of the body, because the soul is described as tasting death. The taster must remain present while tasting occurs. The meaning is that every soul tastes the death of the body. This indicates that the soul is distinct from the body and that the soul does not die with the body. Furthermore, the term Nafs is specific to bodies, hinting that the necessity of death is specific to bodily life, but not to pure spirits (Arwāḥ mujarradah).

However, narrations contradict this. It is reported from Ibn 'Abbās that when Allāh revealed: {Everyone upon it [the earth] will perish} (Ar-Raḥmān: 26), the angels said: "The people of the earth have died." But when {Every soul will taste death} was revealed, the angels said: "We have died."

Issue 4: The Definition of the Deceased

The statement {Every soul will taste death} indicates that a person who is killed is termed mayyit (dead). The one who is ritually slaughtered (madhkāh) is not termed mayyit due to conventional specification.

The verse begins with the statement: {And you will surely be tested in your properties and yourselves}.

This is followed by: {and you will surely hear from those who were given the Scripture before you and from those who associated others with Allāh much abuse}.

Then comes the command: {But if you are patient and fear Allāh - indeed, that is from the matters [requiring] resolve} ('azm al-umūr).
