Al 'Imran: (4) Before it... Guidance...

Some exegetes restricted this verse specifically to the Christians, limiting the general wording to the occasion of its revelation. However, the established scholars among the exegetes state that the specificity of the cause of revelation does not preclude the generality of the wording. Therefore, it encompasses everyone who turns away from the signs of God Almighty.

Then He said: {And Allāh is All-Mighty, Possessor of Retribution} (Āl 'Imrān: 4).

  • Al-'Azīz (The All-Mighty) is the Overpowering One who cannot be overcome.
  • Al-Intiqām (Retribution) is punishment. It is said, intaqamā minhu intiqāman (He punished him with retribution), meaning He chastised him. Al-Layth said: "I was not satisfied with him until I expressed displeasure (naqamtu minhu) and exacted retribution (intaqamtu), meaning He recompensed him with punishment for what he did."
  • Al-'Azīz points to the absolute power to punish, while Dhū al-Intiqām (Possessor of Retribution) points to Him being the Doer of the punishment. Thus, the first is an attribute of the Essence (Dhat), and the second is an attribute of the Action (Fi'l). And Allāh knows best.

{7} **{Indeed, Allāh, nothing is hidden from Him in the earth or in the heaven. It is He who forms you in the wombs as He wills. There is no deity except Him, the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.}** (Āl 'Imrān: 6-7)
