Surah Al 'Imran: (57) As for those who believe...
There are several issues concerning this verse:
Issue 1: The Reading of "Fayūfīhim"
- Hafs's reading (from 'Asim): Reads it with the Yā' (فيوفيهم), meaning "He (Allah) will give them their rewards in full."
- The rest of the reciters: Read it with the Nūn (فَنُوفِيهِم), connecting it to the preceding context, such as "Judge, then punish them" (فاحكم * فأعذبهم). This reading is considered primary because it maintains the flow of the discourse.
Issue 2: The Description of Believers
The verse mentions those who believe (الذين آمنوا) and then describes them as those who do righteous deeds (عملوا الصالحات).
- This indicates that righteous action is distinct from the mere definition of faith (Imān). This point has been discussed repeatedly before.
Issue 3: Action as the Cause for Reward
Those who argue that action is the effective cause for recompense cite the phrase "He will give them their rewards in full" (فيوفيهم أجورهم).
- They liken the believers, in their worship done for the sake of reward, to hired laborers. This discussion has also been covered previously. (And Allah knows best.)
Issue 4: Divine Will and Disapproval of Injustice
The Mu'tazila use the verse "And Allah does not love the wrongdoers" (والله لا يحب الظالمين) as proof that the Almighty does not will disbelief and sins.
- Their Argument: Whoever wills something must necessarily love it, especially when that thing pertains to actions. Love and will only differ when applied to specific persons (e.g., "I love Zayd" vs. "I will Zayd"). However, when applied to actions, their meanings are identical according to the true meaning of the language. Therefore, "Allah does not love the wrongdoers" is equivalent to "Allah does not will the wrongdoing of the wrongdoers." This is how the Qadi (Al-Qadi 'Abd al-Jabbar) established the point.
- Our Position (Ahl al-Sunnah): Love, in this context, is an expression of the will to convey goodness to someone. Thus, even if Allah wills the disbelief of the disbeliever (in the sense of allowing it to occur), He does not will to convey reward to him. This issue has been addressed many times.
