And they had already promised Allah before not to turn their backs and flee. And ever is the promise to Allah [that about which one will be] questioned.

Tafsir

Translation and Exegesis (Based on Fakhr al-Din al-Razi's Mafatih al-Ghayb)
Context: These verses serve as a clarification of the corruption of their inner intentions and the ugliness of their conduct due to their breaking of covenants. Previously, they had lagged behind [in battle], showed excuses and regret, and claimed that fighting was their long-standing custom.
Verse 15 (Implied continuation/context): Then He threatened them by saying:
{And the covenant of Allah was a matter to be inquired about.}
And His saying:
{Say: "Flight will not benefit you if you flee from death or being killed."}
This indicates that matters are decreed; one cannot escape what has been determined. What Allah has ordained will come to pass. Whoever is commanded to do something and then disobeys remains in the predicament of punishment later, and gains no benefit from the disobedience immediately.
Then the Almighty said:
{And then you would not enjoy [life] except for a little while.}
It is as if He is saying: Even if you managed to flee on that day—though it is impossible—you would not remain [alive] forever; rather, you would only enjoy [life] for a short time. A wise person would not desire something meager that causes them to lose something great. Therefore, there is no escape for you; and even if there were, the enjoyment after fleeing would only be for a little while.
Verse 16:
{Say: "Who is it that can protect you from Allah if He intends evil for you, or intends mercy for you?" And they will not find for themselves, besides Allah, any protector or helper.}
Exegesis: This is a direct challenge: Ask them, "Who can shield you from Allah if He wills harm for you, or if He wills mercy for you?"
This verse establishes the absolute power of Allah. If Allah wills harm (e.g., through defeat or death), no one can prevent it. If He wills mercy (e.g., through victory or safety), no one can withhold it.
The conclusion follows immediately:
{And they will not find for themselves, besides Allah, any protector or helper.}
This confirms that in the face of divine decree, whether for good or ill, they have no guardian (wali) or supporter (nasir) other than Allah.
